Selecting A Chandelier

A chandelier can be a focal point of any room, whether it is a dining room, entry foyer, or stairwell. In addition to making sure the space is well lit, a chandelier can add a new level of style to any space.

When selecting a chandelier, think about these considerations:

First, be sure to measure your space. You will want to make sure that the dimensions of your new chandelier are not bigger than any given side of your dining room table. If you are hanging the chandelier in a foyer, hallway, or stairwell, you will want to make sure there is plenty of space around the light fixture and the walls. You probably want to allow at least three feet of space for the smallest light fixtures, and probably more like five or six feet for large chandeliers. This can become especially difficult to judge if you can a ceiling tray or large molding.

You will want to think about the amount of light you need in the space. If your new chandelier will be the only light source in the room, you will want to make sure that it provides enough light for the job at hand – whether it is enjoying a freshly grilled steak in your dining room or allows you to navigate steps in the dark of the night. You might also want to make sure that the type of bulbs in your chandelier can work with a dimmer switch. A light dimmer is an inexpensive and effective way to control the mood of the room by adjusting the amount of light in the room.

If you are going to hang a dining room chandelier, you generally want the light fixture to sit three feet above the top of your table. Make sure that you calculate the height of the chandelier and the space you need between the light and the table so that you can ensure there is enough space. Some chandeliers can be surprisingly tall. You want to make sure they will fit vertically in the space.

Next, think about the style and accents in your room. Are you working to create a traditional look or something that is a bit more sleek and modern? Are there any accents in the room, such as silver door knobs in a hall or brushed nickel pulls on kitchen cabinets and drawers? Take a few minutes to look around your room and describe it in your mind. Then, when you look for a new chandelier, think about how you can match the accents and style in your room with the new lighting fixture.

Finally, be sure that you take your time, look at the options that are available, and find a fixture that you really like. A chandelier is functional and provides light, but so much more than that it is a reflection (no pun intended) of your style. Some would even consider chandeliers to be works of art. Don’t buy the first piece you see, and don’t skimp on your budget. As you enjoy the light from your new chandelier for years to come, you will be glad that you took the time and the money to get something that you really like.
